These cufflinks have been decorated with what is known as Toledo wear. This type of decoration was used in the making of Swords in Toledo in Spain in the later half of the fifteenth century. The artisans learned and brought the technology to the Iberian peninsula from the famous city Damascus, in Syria, hence the other commonly used name - Damascene. Damascening is the application of interlacing gold on iron or steel to produce beautiful decorative designs. This decoration has been combined with a triangle of faux mother of pearl. Measures 2.5x1.7cm
