Circa 1861-1900
Following the death of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria went into a self-imposed mourning for the remainder of her life, as a result, black, or mourning, jewellery became highly popular. This jewellery could be made from a number of materials but the most prized was Whitby jet. This carved domed brooch is Whitby Jet. Measures 4.5x3.5cm. As you can see in one of the pictures there is a chip on one side of the brooch, in reality it is not very noticeable.
