As you know, after the death of Prince Albert Queen Victoria went in to mourning for the rest of her life.  As a result, jewellery for mourning and of a sentimental nature became popular, the best of these pieces would have been made out of materials like Whitby jet and Onyx.  In order to meet the demands less expensive materials had to be utilised.  This exquisite little brooch has been set with beautifully faceted pieces of French jet, which have been fixed onto a metal back plate.  This back plate has been painted/enamelled with black.  Measures 3cm.  On close inspection I noticed that one of the marquis pieces of glass has a small chip in the end near the pin, but this is not very noticeable.
