After the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Victoria went into mourning for the rest of her life time. Jet, which is a fossilised pine, became one of the popular materials for making mourning jewellery. Some pieces were combined with angel coral such as this brooch. The coral has been carved with an image of a classical man wearing a garland of leaves. The back of the brooch has a metal back plate, probably brass, with a C type clasp. Measures approx. 3.5x3cm. As you can see, the coral has a few darkened spots but these are much more pronounced in the photograph.
